![]() It's used primarily for broadcasting messages over a network. Related Terminology: Broadcasting sends a message to everyone on the network whereas multicasting sends a message to a select list of recipients. IP addresses and packets are layer 3, MAC addresses are layer 2! Layer two data is called a frame, and doesn't involve IP addresses. What do we do in Data-Link layer? What about the physical address? Whose addresses are they? When a layer-3 packet is being sent, it must be encapsulated by a layer-2 frame. If two PCs in different networks, we try to sent data from one another, we specify the IP address of the destination PC in the Network layer for each packet. ![]() ![]() ![]() Destination address, source address and MAC. ![]()
